Blessed Are They Who Hear the Word and Keep It

‘Life is a continuum of wild, memorable, sorrowful, happy events; with all its twists and turns bottled up in an envelope of time.’

Time on the other hand is universal as its constant rate of passage is independent of the state of motion of an observer. To sum it up in one word; life and time are interwoven, yet endless.

I trouble my mind most times trying to fully grasp all that has happened in my life but each time I travel down that dark narrow tunnel, deep into the pits called ‘memories of the past’, I either end up with a mood swing or I hurriedly bury back that which I had only recently unearthed.

‘Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things have passed away; behold, all things are become new.’ [2 Corinthians 5:17]

Christmas is only few days away, advent programs worldwide are in full swing with the church urging the lay faithful to participate in the sacrament of penance before Christmas, the harmattan yet to be felt in most parts of Lagos and suddenly, I’m thankful to God for the journey so far regardless of my many flaws.

‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!’ [Luke 11:28]

In yesterday’s gospel readings (21st), we read the story about Mary’s visit to her kinswoman Elizabeth. It was recorded that the instant Elizabeth heard the greetings of Mary, the baby in her womb leapt for joy and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.

‘She gave a loud cry and said, “Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?”’ [Luke 1: 42 – 43]

It is from this passage in the bible the Roman Catholic Church derived one of the most widely said prayers in human history, ‘The Hail Mary’.

The utterances of Elizabeth substantiate the belief in the Roman Catholic Church that Mary is the mother of God the son; mother of God.

We are also called today to believe as Mary did and blessed is he/she who believes that the promise made to he/she by the Lord would be fulfilled.

Stay blessed and fired up, better days are ahead! Selah!
